Posted August 04, 2018 17:10:13The most expensive job in the country, a nurse, was listed as the most expensive by a salary comparison site, according to the latest figures published by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The most valuable jobs, including doctors and engineers, were also listed as being among the most valuable by the website, with salaries at £82,000.
The figures showed that in total, the UK is home to more than one million nurses, a quarter of the workforce, and more than 2.6 million doctors and medical workers.
However, the highest salary of £72,000 was paid to an IT consultant, who was paid £82k.
The ONS also published data on the salaries paid to the highest paid professions, including surgeons and lawyers, but did not list the highest paying professions for the NHS.
The latest ONS figures show that the NHS is home by far to the most people who earn more than £150,000 per year, accounting for 43 per cent of all the jobs in England.
In total, there are nearly 3.7 million people in the workforce earning more than the £150k threshold.
The average salary in the health sector is £27,000, with healthcare and social care employees the highest earners at £28,000 each.
The NHS has a budget of £16.5bn, which accounts for just over 15 per cent, and £5bn of this is funded by individual tax credits.
The rest comes from the taxpayer.
However the ONS said the NHS had the highest proportion of nurses earning more that £50,000 and that this figure had grown from 2.5 per cent to 3.3 per cent since 2015.
The Office for Budget Responsibility, which is responsible for estimating the deficit, said the rise in nurses’ salaries was driven by the NHS’s increased demand for nurses.
The government has said the health service is in recession.
