An employee of the Nike employee shop in Bangladesh is set to shut down in the next two weeks, the country’s health minister said on Wednesday, after the retailer announced it would close its outlet in the country.
Mohammad Akhtaruddin, the minister for health, said the decision to close the store was made to ensure public health.
“This is a decision of the Health Ministry that was taken after a thorough review,” he told reporters in Dhaka.
“In the past, the health ministry had made certain health requirements for the employees.
However, they have decided to do this in order to reduce health costs for employees,” Akhtar said.
The shop, which is one of two locations in Dhakwa province in Bangladesh, was set to open on March 11, according to its website.
The other location is located in Chittagong.
The health ministry said the closures will have a negative impact on the lives of employees and their families, the Associated Press news agency reported.
“The health minister has requested the Government of Bangladesh to extend the stay of the employees at the shop till the end of the next week,” Aktaruddin said.
